Finn McCready was nine years old and had already figured out that the world operated on deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His dad made deals at the lumber yard \u2014 handshakes and phone calls and numbers written on the backs of receipts. His mom made deals with his little sister Gracie: eat three bites of broccoli and you get dessert. His teacher Mr. Paulson made deals with the whole class: finish the worksheet quietly and we’ll have ten minutes of free reading. Everything, everywhere, all the time, was a negotiation between what you wanted and what someone else was willing to give.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn had decided this was fine. Deals were honest. Deals were clear. You knew where you stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The beagle had shown up on the porch of the old Hargrove barn on a Tuesday morning in late September, which was the same morning that Finn had decided to skip the bus and walk the long way to school through the fields. He had not planned on finding a dog. He had planned on being alone with the particular weight he had been carrying since the last week of August, when his best friend Danny Kowalski had told him \u2014 in the matter-of-fact way that nine-year-olds deliver devastating news \u2014 that his family was moving to Phoenix, Arizona before Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn had said “okay” at the time. He had gone home and eaten dinner and done his homework and brushed his teeth. He had not said anything to his parents because there was nothing to say. Danny was leaving. That was the fact. Feelings about facts didn’t change them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the weight of it had settled in his chest like a stone, and some mornings it was easier to walk through the fields than to sit on the bus where Danny still saved him the window seat out of habit, and neither of them talked about Phoenix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The beagle was sitting at the top of the porch steps when Finn came around the side of the barn. It was a young dog \u2014 not a puppy exactly, but not fully grown either, with the oversized paws that meant it still had some growing ahead of it. Brown and white and a warm tan color along its ears, with eyes that were the particular shade of amber that made them look lit from inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It looked at Finn the way dogs sometimes look at people \u2014 with a directness that humans rarely manage, a total lack of pretense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn stopped. He looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You lost?” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog’s tail moved once, slowly. Not the frantic wag of an excited dog. The considered wag of a dog that was making a judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn sat down on the porch steps. He didn’t plan to \u2014 his body just made the decision without consulting the part of his brain that was worried about being late to school. He sat down and leaned against the post and looked at the dog, and the dog looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m Finn,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog raised one paw off the ground. Just slightly. Just enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Okay,” Finn said. “Good start.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He reached into his jacket pocket. He had half a granola bar from yesterday’s lunch, slightly crushed, still in its wrapper. He held it out, not as a bribe \u2014 he wanted to be clear about that, at least to himself \u2014 but as information. As a way of saying: I have things. I am willing to share them. That is the kind of person I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog leaned forward and sniffed his hand with great seriousness, the way a banker might examine a document. Then it sat back and raised both paws off the ground, holding them up in front of its chest, and looked at Finn with an expression of total patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Did someone teach you that?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Okay,” Finn said. “Here’s the deal.” He broke the granola bar in half. “You get half now. You get the other half if you’re still here when I come back this afternoon. That way I know you’re not just being nice to me for the food.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had thought about this precise issue before, with people. It was something he worried about \u2014 whether people were friendly because they liked you or because you were useful to them. Danny had been the only person Finn had ever been one hundred percent certain liked him for the actual him, not for anything he had or could provide. That was the thing about Danny leaving that he could not explain to anyone. It wasn’t just losing a friend. It was losing the one person around whom Finn did not have to perform any version of himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He set half the granola bar on the step. The dog ate it with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I have to go to school,” Finn said. He stood up. He looked at the dog for a long moment. “I’m going to be honest with you. I don’t know whose dog you are. And I don’t have a plan. But I’ll be back at four o’clock, and if you’re here, we can figure out the next part together.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He walked away without looking back. This was a technique he had developed \u2014 if you looked back, you gave something away. You showed them what you were hoping for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He made it to the edge of the field before he looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dog was watching him go, sitting straight at the top of the steps, paws neatly together, tail making its slow and thoughtful movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finn turned back toward the road. He felt something in his chest that was not quite the weight he had been carrying for weeks. It was something else. Something that had edges he hadn’t mapped yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He decided to call the dog Captain. Not permanently. Just for now. Just until he knew more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
