PART 2

My hands were shaking as I clicked open the message thread. It wasn’t what I feared. Emma wasn’t another woman — she was a wedding planner, and the “hotel bookings” were for a boutique inn two hours outside the city, the same one where Mark and I had spent our honeymoon eleven years ago.

I kept scrolling, my heart still pounding, half expecting the worst. Instead I found a string of messages Mark had sent over the past three months: booking the exact restaurant where he proposed, requesting the same song for a private dinner, and — buried near the bottom — a message to Emma asking her to help him plan “the surprise of a lifetime” for our anniversary, because “eleven years ago I promised her forever, and I want her to know I meant it.”

The “canceled trip” and the “late meetings” weren’t lies about another woman. They were cover stories. Mark had spent weeks secretly coordinating a surprise trip back to the inn where we fell in love, right down to recreating our first dinner there, dish for dish.

I closed the laptop and sat there for a long time, torn between guilt for snooping and overwhelming relief. When Mark came home that night, I almost told him everything. But I didn’t — I let him keep his surprise.

Three days later, he “canceled another meeting” and drove me two hours out of the city, blindfold and all. When he took it off, we were standing in front of the same inn, the same table set up outside, string lights and all.

I never told him I’d seen the folder. Some secrets, I realized, are worth letting someone keep — especially when they were never hiding anything but love.
